Types of Sand in Bangladesh: Sand is a naturally occurring inorganic substance composed of granulated pebbles. It is of paramount importance in our daily routines and is regarded as one of the prerequisites for the development of infrastructures.

Sand Types and Classification

Pit Sand:

This coarse sand is frequently encountered in a red-orange hue. It is protected by deep trenches that are excavated 1 to 2 meters beneath the surface of the soil.

This sand also enhances the strength of the concrete by minimizing segregation during placement, bleeding, honeycombing, voids, and capillary.

Sand sieve analysis:


A sieve analysis (gradation test) is a procedure or method that is employed to ascertain the compliance of particulate material with design, production control, and verification specifications by examining the particle size distribution.

The size distribution is frequently a significant concern when attempting to understand the material’s behavior during use.

Analysis of the sieve Procedure: Obtain a 500g sample of grit that has been oven-dried.
Determine the precise mass of the sample.
Prepare a stack of sieves and arrange the sieves with larger opening sizes (e.g., 600u, 300u, 150u, and 75u) above the sieves with smaller opening sizes (e.g., 4.75mm, 2.36mm, 1.18mm). A pan is positioned at the base of the container to capture the sand that has passed through all of the sieves.
Place the cover on the stack of sieves and pour the sand in from the top. Then, secure the stack in the sieve shaker and agitate it for 10 to 15 minutes.
The mass of the retained sand in each sieve should be measured after the sieve agitator is stopped.
